Crossing Hofma

Friday, October 10th, 2008

You win some and you loose some. Tonight was definitely the later. We actually tried this one on the 4th but it was getting late and when we got to the point we realized that it was a multi. Not only was it a multi, but it was a REALLY long one (a 2.5 mile hike). Before we found the coordinates for the second point, a guy and his dog came by to check for some birds. We decided to call it a night and come back another night.

Fast forward to tonight and we tried Crossing Hofma again. (On the way out we saw some people trying Hoff N Hide. They said it was their first cache ever. We don’t know for sure if they found it or not. As of the time of this writing, there’s no log entry for it.) This time we managed to find the first two points, but we got stumped at the third. We looked for quite some time, but the GPS just wouldn’t give us a good lock on where we were. It was jumping around so much that the actual point could have been anywhere in about a 100 foot radius. A hundred feet in the woods contains a LOT of places to hide a small laminated card and while we certainly looked in a lot of places, we obviously didn’t look in enough. We decided to call it a night if we wanted to have a chance at any other caches tonight.

Onward and Upward

Friday, October 10th, 2008

It’s really painful to log Onward and Upward as a Did Not Find because it’s not our fault at all. In fact, we’re only logging it on our site and not on geocaching.com. We got to pretty close to where the cache is when a group of teenagers came by. Most of them were smoking and they seemed to be under age. It would appear they were just hiding out in the woods. Anyway, it seemed unwise to look for the cache in their field of view (and it had to be within view of where they were) so we moved on.

Hoff N Hide

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

The second cache we did in the park was Hoff N Hide. This one was a slight hike into the woods, but not too bad. We took a battery case and left behind the the White Jeep Travel Bug “Ardella”. There was another cache in the park, but it was a 2.5 mile multi and it was getting too late to do that one. We’ll have to head back that way another night.

Hof and Puff and Blow the Trees Down

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

After we did two out of the three Brit prerequisites, we went over to the Hoff Preserve where there were a few caches. We tackled Hof and Puff and Blow the Trees Down first. A pretty easy find fairly close to the parking lot. We took a bracelet and left a princess mini-frisbee.

Wee Brit

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

After we finished Big Brit, we went to the next closest cache. Wee Brit was in the same blueberry field. Not only was the container on this one smaller, so was the required number of points. We found it pretty quickly. Haylee traded a couple bracelets she had picked up at Big Brit for some beads from this one.

BIG BRIT

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

Our first trip out in October started at a blueberry field in Grand Haven. The first cache we did was BIG BRIT. The coordinates at the first point were a little hard to read so when we had a hard time finding the coordinates at the second point we started to doubt if we had read them correct. So we went back and checked again. We had the right coordinates in the GPS. We took a look at the hint for the cache and went back to where we were to look a second time. We managed to find it. All went well until we got to the next to the last point. We couldn’t find coordinates to the last point. The hint said something about cricket. We assumed it meant the game, but neither one of us had a clue how to play it so the clue didn’t make much sense. After a few fruitless phone calls, we looked it up on the BlackBerry and got enough information from wikipedia to take a closer look at a couple things. Sure enough, we found it. Moved on to the final point and found the cache no problem. We left the TYCHO travel bug. We almost forgot to get the clue for the British Invasion so we had to run back and get it.
